What is a CNY jacket?
A CNY jacket is a casual jacket that borrows three details from traditional Chinese menswear: a standing mandarin collar, knotted fabric buttons down the front, and a straight, loose body. CNY stands for Chinese New Year, the festival the style is linked to. CNY is not a brand.
The design comes from the Tang jacket, or tangzhuang, which developed from the magua, a riding jacket worn during China's Qing dynasty. The knotted closures are called pankou in Chinese and frog buttons in English.
What changed recently is the fabric and the fit. Sportswear and streetwear brands rebuilt the Tang jacket as a track top, with striped sleeves, a soft suede-like fabric, and an oversized cut. That modern version is what most people now mean by a CNY jacket.

Why did the Adidas CNY jacket go viral?
The Adidas CNY jacket went viral because it looked new and was hard to get. Adidas says its Shanghai design team created the jacket for shoppers in China. It sold first in China, then in a few other Asian markets, and reached Europe in February 2026.
While it was limited to Asia, videos of the jacket spread on TikTok and Instagram, stores sold out, and resale listings climbed as high as $400, according to CNN's report on the Adidas Tang jacket. The jacket is also part of a wider trend in China called xinzhongshi, or new Chinese style, in which young people wear modern versions of traditional designs.
India got an official release later. Esquire India reported that the jacket went live on the Adidas India website on 3 September 2026.

How to wash a CNY jacket
Vegan suede needs gentle care. This is how we recommend washing ours.
- Hand wash in cold water, separately and inside out.
- Do not bleach, and do not tumble dry on high heat.
- Dry in the shade. Direct sunlight can fade suede fabric.
- Do not iron directly over the embroidery.
The knot buttons are stitched fabric, not a print, so there is nothing to peel or crack in the wash.
